Introduction: Transitioning into product management from a Tier 3 engineering college can seem daunting, but trust me it’s a journey worth taking. As an aspiring product manager, I’ve faced many of the same challenges and doubts you might be experiencing. However, we can make our dreams a reality with the right strategies and mindset. In this post, I’ll share some of the methods I’ve been using and the tips I’ve gathered from my research and interactions with industry professionals.
Leveraging Your Education: Our engineering background provides a solid foundation for a career in product management. Despite the challenges of coming from a Tier 3 college, the technical knowledge, DSA, problem-solving skills, and project experiences we’ve gained are invaluable. We can use these strengths to demonstrate our value as product managers, Because as a Product Manager we don’t need to code but we need to know the terminologies and logic behind the app or the product.
Developing Essential Skills: Through my journey, I’ve learned that certain skills are crucial for excelling in product management:
Communication and Presentation Skills: Articulating ideas clearly and persuasively is key. I’m continuously practicing by joining public speaking clubs and participating in group discussions.
Analytical Thinking: Developing a knack for data analysis is essential. I’m working on small projects that require data-driven decisions to hone this skill.
Leadership and Team Collaboration: Reflecting on any leadership roles I’ve held, even informal ones, helps me understand how to showcase these experiences. (In your case, It may be a College’s Student Club leader, or any other Leadership role in College, office or non-profit organization )
Business Acumen: Understanding business strategy and market dynamics is critical. I’m exploring various resources to build this knowledge. You can read a book by Josh Kaufman “The Personal MBA”
Building a Strong Portfolio: Despite our college background, build a compelling portfolio is mandatory:
Personal Projects: Undertake projects related to product management or tech entrepreneurship.
Choose Industry: Based on your educational background, work experience, or interest, pin-point a sector to work on. It could be ed-tech, fin-tech, food-tech, health-tech, SAAS, crypto, or anything and then start adding value to the companies in your selected industry.
Case Studies and Problem-Solving Examples: Develop case studies showcasing your problem-solving skills and results achieved in your selected industry.
Networking and Industry Connections: Networking is crucial, and here’s what I’m doing:
Joining Professional Groups: I’ve joined product management forums, meetups, and LinkedIn groups to learn and connect with like-minded professionals.
Attending Conferences and Workshops: I’m attending events to expand my knowledge and network, learning from industry experts and meeting potential mentors.

Preparing for Interviews: After Building your Portfolio and Resume start Practicing for product manager interviews, There are mainly 6 types of Questions asked by the interviewers : Common HR questions, Behavioral Questions, Estimation Questions, Product Questions, Case studies, and problem-solving scenarios.
